I often get asked by brides and grooms about the size of wedding cakes they should order for their D-day. And so I thought about writing on this topic today.
Frankly, speaking there are many things, which should be considered when it comes to choosing the size of the wedding cake.
Your choice can be purely dictated by the number of portions of cake you have to serve your guests. For instance, if you have invited about 120 guests for the reception party then a 3-4 tier cake will be more than enough for the number of portions needed. But the size of the tiers is actually the key to whether a 4th tier is needed or whether 3 will do.
You should also decide whether you will want to offer a second slice to your guests. However, if you do so, you will obviously make them feel special. But for that, you will need to order a bigger cake size.
Sometimes it’s purely the wedding cake’s design, which dictates the number of tiers. There are after all many couples who decide to order a similar designed cake that they have come across a magazine or website. Whether they will need the entire cake or not is not their issue, the only thing is they want their cake to look exactly like the one they have come across. They loved the design, which they had seen and so want something that’s exactly similar.
A lot of couples even request for something that’s grand. They want their cake to be the centerpiece and the focal point of the room.
While I do supply wedding cakes in Brisbane for big weddings, I am sometimes also asked to supply a cake of 7, 6 or 5 tiers, when actually only 4 tiers of it are required for feeding the guests. In such cases, I generally ask couples whether they will really need the additional cake or whether it would be sensible for them to use one or two fake tiers. Even if it is the fake ones, nobody is going to understand.
However, I always advise brides and grooms to take the top tier of the cake home. They can celebrate with it the day after their wedding. So, not counting the top tier when deciding on the size to be ordered for guests would be a wise idea.
